Patient as Platform: The Real (scary to some) Healthcare Reform!

ADVERTISEMENTS

The Patient as Platform reality is the Real Disrupter! What Doc Searls articulates, in the wonderful way that his muse allows, is what many of us that grew up in tech already know, and have started to become vocal about. The patient is the only sane point of integration for PHI. Sure we need truly interoperable systems, and a hundred years from now we may see them, but the individual patient is the super integrator, right here, right now.

What we need is data enabled interoperable human beings. This has to scare the living crap out of the healthcare status quo, because once the proprietary hold on data is broken then "Katy Bar the Door," American entrepreneurship (still unmatched anywhere in the world) will drive change faster than Google transformed the Internet.

This ship has already set sail and the destination is inevitable: massive change in the delivery of healthcare, driven by the consumer and enabled by government (not the other way around). The HITECH Act is an enabler, the consumer leveraging the slightly opened door and kicking the rest of in will be a revolution (bloodless the way we prefer them in the U.S. but not without pain).

The baby boomers are poised to claim their place in the nation's history. Armed with laptops and Internet connections they are about to leave their mark on the nation's history.

HITECH To stay current on the HITECH Act and its quickly changing regulatory scheme visit the HITECH Survival Guide website and/or sign up for Digital Business Law Group's free monthly compliance newsletter. Also, check out a FREE EHR Checklist and a FREE Online Backup Checklist, both are provided from HSG affiliates.
