Two Multiple-Car Pile Ups on Mother?s Day Result in Two Tragic Deaths

By Pierce Egerton

ADVERTISEMENTS

Two different mothers lost a child on Mothers Day, May 9, 2010 in Greensboro, North Carolina when two separate multiple-car collisions resulted in the deaths of two young people.

The first accident occurred around 6:00 p.m. when a tractor-trailer failed to reduce speed as it and several other vehicles approached a highway construction zone on I-40 near High Point Road.

A witness of the wreck, Steven Reynolds, said, 'I could tell from my vantage point a good 10 seconds before [the driver of the tractor-trailer] was going to hit the cars in front of her and she wasn't reacting to traffic slowing down,' in an article on myfox8.com.

It may be that the driver of the tractor-trailer was distracted while driving. Signs indicating highway construction ahead were clearly visible but a change in the traffic pattern in the road—motorists now merge from the right-hand lane to the left—could have contributed to confusion.

Five cars were entangled in the wreck. Nine people were taken to Moses Cone Memorial Hospital. Tragically, a 15-year-old boy died at the scene.

In another crash later on that same evening, a 26-year-old passenger lost her life in a different pile-up near the same stretch of I-40. In that incident, a tractor-trailer was involved but it was the driver of a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt that apparently caused the rear-end collision.

These collisions occur only weeks after National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week. And there has been extensive media coverage regarding the dangers of texting while driving over the past several months. The hazards of following too close have received considerably less attention, despite the fact that many of these deadly accidents could be prevented if motorists would keep a safe travelling distance from one another, especially on the highway.
