: The GavelColorado Lawmakers Pass New Disclosure Law
By Peter Hardin
Colorado’s legislature has voted vote to require disclosure of corporate and labor union political expenditures, in response to the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling.
The legislation was sent to the desk of Gov. Bill Ritter for his signature, according to an article in the Colorado Statesman. It requires corporations and unions to disclosure independent political expenditures of more than $1,000 through registration as independent expenditure committees.
A sponsor, Democratic state Sen. Morgan Carroll, told the newspaper that Citizens United created the potential for a flood of millions of dollars of spending on political advertising with citizens left in the dark about the ad sponsors.
Four other states passed legislation earlier in response to the Supreme Court ruling; they are Arizona, South Dakota, West Virginia and Iowa. To read about states responding to Citizens United, click here for related Gavel Grab articles.
