The History of Bankruptcy in the United States for the last 100 Years, including The Chandler Act (Bankruptcy is my Middle Name!)

By Joseph McDaniel, Esq.

ADVERTISEMENTS
I ran into a nice article that discussed the increases in bankruptcy filings over the last 100 years or so. It's located here: http://www.stlouisfed.org/publications/br/articles/?id=563

It has a particularly spiffy hocky-stick graph of bankruptcy filings over the last 100 years, and tries to correlate those filings with other events, like the greater availability of credit to the middle class over the last one hundred years.

I also liked the article because it made reference to Chandler. Not Chandler, Arizona, which is itself a bankruptcy capital of Metropolitan Phoenix, but the Chandler Act, which was a precursor to our current bankruptcy laws.

Why do I like discussions of The Chandler Act? Is it because I have a strong interest in historical events in the development of the current bankruptcy law of the United States?

I asked myself that same question: "Joseph Chandler McDaniel, why is it that the Chandler Act is so interesting to you?"

I have not yet found the answer. I'll keep you posted.
