A judge from Zimbabwe's highest court calls for heightened professionalism among lawyers and includes this example, ?If, for example, a murderer comes to you and confesses that he or she murdered someone but wants you to plead not guilty in court on his or her behalf, you should be candid enough to decline to represent such a client if you are ethical,? said Justice Makarau. . . . . . The nomination of Goodwin Liu is being delayed, yet seems to be inching toward resolution. . . . . . This editorial calls for law firms to disclose just what an equity partner is and the demographics of partners. It seems to me that there are at least two issues there. First, should firms adopt a uniform definition of equity partner? I'd say no. Partnerships should experiment, innovate, etc., in the best interests of the partnership. Second, should firms be more forthcoming about their private finances, including the income structure of equity and non-equity partners? There's a pretty strong privacy interest at stake. But, to be clear, a full look at the demographics of large law firm isn't going to make anyone happy, and some of the opposition must be flowing from that fact, especially since some of the people calling for the data have called for public shaming of the firms. For that matter, the demographics of the law schools, make-up of the judiciary, and other sectors isn't going to make anyone happy.
