On Second Thought

ADVERTISEMENTS
I am so far refraining from posting the tracklist of mixes I make in which there is some sentiment attached, but this blog is and its readers are so awesome, that I have come to rely on you all for advice and good judgement. Also, TD doesn't read this blog, I swear, despite me giving him permission to read the blog. Or if he does, he never mentions anything about it, and thus half of the work every night is coming up with something to talk about that isn't centered on an online exchange/experience, which is harder than you think when you are essentially a fictitious person. I don't really exist, you know. Or do you. I only exist here, and whenever I am not online, I am but a figment of your imagination.

Anyway, I don't put up tracklists anymore, although once I did, foolishly. I have compared parsing tracklists and lyrics to canons of statutory interpretation. I have pined for the ultimate mix tape, which I still have never gotten, although I am wondering if it is necessary--like I have received plenty of crappy poetry and pretentious love letters written in German (which I can't read) in my life, and they didn't mean much. Ich bin verliebt, blah blah. I have pondered whether public, free mixes can ever be as artistic and special as even the crappiest collection of '90s pop made for you with care. I have even put up the tracklist of one Whiny McEmo mix I made for myself in the throes of disappointed whatever, which was very inadvisable.

Anyway, I am making some mixes for an upcoming weekend trip with TD. I did this the last time, with "Dude Rock," essentially a collection of classic rock and fun, jangly Brit/Scot/Swedish gems. This time I was thinking of creating one called either "Old Sad Bastard Music" or the aforementioned "Whiny McEmo Girl," and one "Happy Pappy Crap." The Happy Pappy one will be fun--50's girl bands, some modern dance music from the likes of The Boy Least Likely To, etc., plenty of occasion for jazz bands. But do I dare pull the Whiny McEmo on TD? Hypothetically, let us say I was considering the following tracklist (highlight):

1. Fidelity -- Regina Spektor
2. Mushaboom -- Feist
3. Falling -- Ben Kweller
4. Better - Regina Spektor
5. Love is No Big Truth -- Kings of Convenience
6. Don't Give Up -- The Whitest Boy Alive
7. Be Be Your Love -- Rachel Yamagata
8. I Shall Believe -- Sheryl Crow
9. I Found A Reason -- Cat Power
10. Arms of a Woman -- Amos Lee
11. Hold You In My Arms -- Ray La Montagne
12. The Greatest -- Cat Power
13. Aaron and Maria -- American Analog Set
14. A Lack of Color -- Death Cab for Cutie
15. Such Unlikely Lovers -- Elvis Costello
16. Limit To Your Love -- Feist

Does this say to you, "find the next rest stop and run," or what?

Relatedly, there could be a post on "songs to deploy strategically, limitedly, and if at all" Like "I Believe" by Stevie Wonder.
