By Mark Zamora
Following in the footsteps of Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal Thursday, Alabama Gov. Bob Riley declared a state of emergency late Friday as U.S. Gulf Coast states brace for what could be one of the worst oil spills in U.S. history if it's not contained.
"This oil leak poses a serious threat to our environment and economy," Gov. Riley said. "With our natural resources, our businesses and our coastal communities in harm's way, Alabama can't afford to take anything for granted. Our state agencies have been working with federal agencies to prepare Alabama for an unprecedented environmental disaster."
Gov. Riley's declaration comes after days of briefings with officials from various federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Coast Guard. This week, he has taken two aerial tours over the Gulf of Mexico to survey the oil spill and to assess its magnitude. Friday, he also participated in a conference call with U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and other Gulf Coast state governors to discuss response measures.
The federal government has established a unified command center in Mobile, Ala., to coordinate the response to the oil spill. There are also others in Florida and Louisiana, according to Todd Stacy, Gov. Riley's press secretary.
