Job Satisfaction of Women in Construction Trades

By John P. Ahlers

ADVERTISEMENTS

Tradeswomen in the Cincinnati, Ohio area were surveyed to assess to their satisfaction or dissatisfaction with construction work.  The study showed that pay, benefits and job security are most important to women in their occupation.  Although the tradeswomen are satisfied with the nature of the work in the construction trades, but are less satisfied with the pay, benefits, job security and availability of separate, hygienic/sanitary facilities.  Co‑worker support or treatment was not important to women, and they were satisfied with the people on the job.  Women who worked outside the local area were more satisfied with the nature of the work and job in general.  Improved union and management support is required to improve the chances of women's success in trades.  See Journal of Construction Engineering and Management, March 2008, S. Dabke Job Satisfaction of Women in Construction Trades.
