: ParalegalGateway BlawgA Coral Gable Paralegal's Amazing Journey
By ParalegalGateway.com
I left Cuba at the age of 11 with my parents and my little sister. My dad was a political prisoner and we were waiting for a flight out of Cuba when the port of Mariel t opened and we were told by the Cuban government we had to leave.
There was no time to say goodbye to our families; we were not allowed to bring anything just the clothes we were wearing and our documents.
We spent a few days going from camp to camp until we finally arrived in Mariel and were put on a boat. We were a handful of families among prostitutes and criminals in the small vessel which exceeded capacity.
Hours after leaving Cuba, I am not sure how it all started, a fight broke out among the passengers and our boat, the Gypsy, was damaged. Water started leaking in slowly. We were floating for three days until the U.S. Coast Guard came to our rescue. They asked for the children to go with them to their boat, but my sister and I refused. We wanted to stay with our parents.
