Peter Scott Campbell's blog: More Speeches From Brandeis Medal Winners

ADVERTISEMENTS

After writing my last post about how Linda Greenhouse’s Brandeis Medal speech was published by the University of Louisville Law Review, I decided to go back and see how many other Brandeis Medal speeches were published there. There weren’t as many as I hoped, but there were still enough to warrant listing here.

There were none before 2001 because before that time, the Review specialized in articles about family law and apparently none of our honorees felt inclined to talk on that subject.

Below, then, is a list of the ones that did get published. I list the date the author, the award/speech was given, the title of the speech and the citation to the publication. (Note:  the Review used to be known as the Brandeis Law Journal.)

Also, on November 13, 2006, the Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville hosted a symposium celebrating the 200th anniversary of Brandeis’ birth. We invited 4 scholars to give speeches on various aspects of Louis D. Brandeis’ life and career. The 4 speeches were later published by the law school.

Erwin Chemerinsky, “Rediscovering Brandeis’s Right to Privacy” 45 Brandeis Law Journal 643. Available here.

Philippa Strum, “Brandeis: The Public Activist and Freedom of Speech” 45 Brandeis Law Journal 659.

David W. Levy, “Brandeis, the Reformer” 45 Brandeis Law Journal 711.

Melvin I. Urofsky, “Louis D. Brandeis: Teacher” 45 Brandeis Law Journal 733.

The law school also gives out the Harlan Award on an irregular basis. So far, only one of those speeches has been published.

Alan C. Page, September 30, 1999, “Justice for the New Millennium” 38 Brandeis Law Journal 1.

Once again,  with the exception of the Chemerinsky speech,  none of these articles are yet available online (unless you have access to Hein Online), so if you want to read them you’ll have to go to your local law library.
