Fatal Accident in South Loop

A UPS semi truck and a Ford car collided at the intersection of Roosevelt Road and Canal Street at 2:38 a.m. Thursday morning.

The accident claimed the life of 25-year-old Rafael Lopez, one of the car's passengers and injured at least four others.

According to police, witnesses say that the car was traveling at a high rate of speed. Fire Department personnel had to extricate some of the victims. Roosevelt Road was shut down, and the police Major Accident Investigation Unit was called to the scene. It was not known immediately which driver was at fault.
