Daimler (Mercedes) and Nissan/Renault to ? Create an Alliance (but not merge exactly)

Recall that Mercedes said not that many years ago that it was “merging” with Chrysler ? then once all the American born executives at Chrysler were moved out in lieu of German born ones, some people acknowledged that it was more of a purchase not a merger. Then, time passed and car sales declined precipitously world wide and Daimler blamed Chrysler for its woes and sold it. Now Daimler has a new “fix” which is to ally, not merge, with Japanese car company, Nissan (who previously was rescued by a merger with the French car company, Renault). ..clear now?”Mr. Ghosn [head of Nissan/Renault] and Dieter Zetsche, chairman of the board of management of Daimler AG, are clearly bringing passion to their partnership. At the press conference, Mr. Zetsche dispelled any comparison between the new partnership and Daimler?s ill-fated merger with Chrysler. “When we came together with Chrysler, we were in agreement on the merger, but hadn?t had much thought on the content of the cooperation,” Mr. Zetsche said. In contrast, he said, Daimler and the Alliance had been working on the specific product collaborations for several months. [Mike?s comment: several months?wow.]“

[Here is an interesting article on the very driven (pun intended) Carlos Ghosn:
