Fatal Shooting Prompts Lawsuit

A lawsuit has been filed against the Fresno Police Department after one of the officers fatally shot a man who was unarmed last fall. The lawsuit also accuses the department of attempting to cover up a pattern of unjustified shootings. Witnesses flagged down police after Steven Anthony Vargas drove his SUV up a curb and began repeatedly ramming another vehicle. Sgt. Mike Palomino approached the vehicle with his gun drawn, and after Vargas did not respond to his orders to leave the SUV, he fired multiple shots into Vargas’ body. The officer claimed he was told Vargas had a weapon in the vehicle, but none was found, and there had been no behavior to warrant that belief, the lawsuit claims. An autopsy showed Vargas was under the influence of illegal narcotics, but the lawsuit states that none of his behavior was cause for an officer to fire multiple bullets directly at him.
