: Legal Pad | LAACLU SoCal wins release of mentally disabled immigrants
By Richard Binder
Jose Antonio Franco-Gonzalez and Guillermo Gomez Sanchez, two mentally disabled men who have been held in immigration detention for nearly five years, will be released to their families in the wake of petitions filed on their behalf by the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California.
The two men will be put on electronic monitoring and treated in community health centers, according to an ACLU spokesperson.
Attorneys filing the petitions said the cases exposed a "black hole" that allows authorities to hold mentally ill immigrants for years without accountability.
