: Brain Injury News and InformationFacilitated communication found to be ineffective in patients in minimal conscious state
By Michael Kaplen
The technique known as ?facilitated communication? in which a patient in a depressed state of consciousness supposedly directs the hand of a therapist who then types out the patient?s thoughts as been discredited by leading medical researchers.
Last November a Belgian man who was in a comatose type state for almost two decades following an automobile accident was thought to be able to communicate using this technique.
While researchers still believe based upon brain scans that the individual is not in a vegetative state has some degree of conscious awareness, they now discredit reports that he can communicate.
