Former worker at upscale senior facility on trial for abuse and torture

Cesar Ulloa, a 21-year-old employee at the Silverado Senior Living facility, is on trial in Van Nuys.  He is charged with seven counts of elder abuse and one count of torture.

A witness said she walked into a room and caught Ulloa hurtling from atop a dresser and landing with both knees on top of an elderly man suffering from dementia.  Additionally, prosecutors claim Ulloa has body-slammed another resident and also allegedly took the arm of one wheelchair-bound resident and used it to hit another resident who had dementia, encouraging them to fight.

Ulloa's attorney, Daniel Teola, denied that his client ever abused residents, attributing the allegations to false rumors circulated by veteran staffers envious of Ulloa's rapid success. Just three months after being hired, Ulloa was named employee of the month.

The state Department of Justice reports 85 elder abuse convictions between 2007 and 2008 in California.
