Sample of New Media Coverage of U.S. Health Reform Bill

By Connie Crosby

ADVERTISEMENTS

In catching up on the news about the progress of the US health care bill, I was interested in the mix of media that provided the news. Notably, the Google News page on US House passes healthcare reform shows an interesting mix of media (click on image for a larger view):

Google News - March 22, 2010 - U.S. healthcare Bill passes

In addition to news stories from a range of sources, I note the Barack Obama quote pulled out (was this automatically generated after being repeated by numerous sources?), and the time line with list of stories on the right. Scrolling further down on the page reveals additional related photos and video:

By clicking on it, one can watch the videos directly from this page.

It has been fascinating to be able to follow the progress of this legislation in such detail both on TV and on the web.

And, at the risk of being overly partisan–or perhaps just too Canadian–I need to express how shocked I am at how House Republican Leader John A. Boehner comes across on Twitter.  How does this kind of commentary reflect on his party? Does he realize the permanence of this medium? Perhaps transparency in government has its down side.
