: Legal Pad | LAL.A. courtrooms hit hard by layoffs
By Richard Binder
Due to the massive shortfall in an $800 million budget, 50 courtrooms are expected to close in Los Angeles by September, laying off nearly 1,000 workers. That's 20 percent of the court system's staff.
Among the closures: one courtroom in the San Fernando Superior Court, as well as courtrooms at the Stanley Mosk, Clara Shortridge Foltz, Malibu, Hollywood, Santa Monica, West Lost Angeles and Central Civil West courthouses. All are expected to close April 1.
The court's budget shortfall this year is about $80 million, roughly ten percent of its yearly budget, but the deficit is projected to grow over the next three years, until 1800 people are laid off and 180 courtrooms and nine courthouses are closed.
