Talking with the Adjuster after a Fairfax Accident is a One-Way Street

By Ben Glass

ADVERTISEMENTS

The insurance adjuster sure seems to have a lot of questions for you following your Fairfax car accident. You have probably been requested to provide extensive details about the crash and your injuries. The insurance adjuster, if he or she hasn't already, will want you to 'just sign a few papers' or 'give a statement.' Doing either of these things could hurt your Virginia accident claim, especially if you haven't consulted with a lawyer.

From the brief time you have been forced to deal with the insurance company, have you noticed that the information sharing appears to be one-sided? You give them information and they don't give you any in return.

Before you agree to sign anything or give a recorded statement, ask the insurance company some questions. Some of these questions could include:

  1. Will you put it in writing that the accident was not my fault?
  2. Will you tell me the amount of insurance the other driver has?
  3. Have you already done video surveillance on me?
  4. If I sign a medical release, will you immediately forward me a copy of all the records you receive?
  5. How much money have you put aside in 'reserve' to pay my claim?

There is a strong chance the insurance company is not going to give you the information you requested, even though you have been cooperating with them.
