Jogger Struck and Killed as SUV Passes Double Parked Vehicles in Bayonne, NJ

An SUV passing double-parked vehicles struck and killed a jogger yesterday in an early morning accident in on Avenue A near the intersection of West 33rd Street in Bayonne, reports The Jersey Journal today.

37-year-old Daniel Gear, of West 23rd Street in Bayonne drove his Ford Explorer southbound on Avenue A about 5 a.m. Thursday morning. He moved into the northbound lanes to pass a slow moving car and two double-parked trucks, a delivery van and a Daily News truck, in front of a catering business at 759 Avenue A. As he passed the trucks, he swerved but failed to avoid hitting Mary Tait, 55, of West 21st Street as she walked or jogged southbound on Avenue A. Gear's SUV hit the Daily News truck, veered into a parked Toyota and Honda, then flipped over onto its roof.

Tait suffered massive trauma injuries to her upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene. The impact of the SUV knocked her out of her shoes and scattered her belongings.

Gear crawled out of the SUV unhurt, but emergency personnel transported him to a local hospital suffering anxiety from the accident.

Bayonne Police continue to investigate the accident. Gear received a summons for improper passing and careless driving. His speed at the time of the accident is unknown, but the posted speed limit is 25mph. The drivers of both trucks received summonses for double-parking.
