Environmental groups claim rush to judgment in Powerlink lawsuit

By Richard Binder

ADVERTISEMENTS

A lawsuit was filed yesterday by three San Diego community groups to stop construction of San Diego Gas and Electric's Sunrise Powerlink transmission line through southern Imperial and San Diego counties.

The Protect Our Communities Foundation, Back Country Against Dumps, and East County Community Action Coalition say federal agencies cut corners and disregarded environmental laws in approving the Powerlink project.  They say construction should be halted until a new review is completed

The lawsuit challenges the January 2009 decision of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to approve the power line. A second lawsuit challenging approval of the power line by the California Public Utilities Commission is pending before an appeals court in San Diego.

The $2.3 billion Sunrise Powerlink is a 120-mile electrical transmission line that would be constructed from the Imperial Valley to central San Diego County. SDG&E say the transmission line is needed to connect with renewable resources in the Imperial Valley.
