March?s Guest Bloggers

By Marc Lamont Hill

First, I’d like to offer a sincere thank you to Dr. Gregory Parks for his invaluable insights as February’s guest blogger.

This month, we welcome two of the nation’s leading young intellectuals, Dr. Salamishah Tillet and Dr. Boyce Watkins, as our guest bloggers.

Salamishah Tillet is an Assistant Professor in the English Department at the University of Pennsylvania. She received her Ph.D. in the History of American Civilization Program at Harvard University in March 2007.  She is currently working on the manuscript titled “Peculiar Memories: Slavery and the Post-Civil
Rights Imagination” in which she examines how contemporary African-American artists and writers reconstruct “sites of slavery” as a trope for their post-Civil Rights political identities.

Dr. Tillet is also the co-founder of A Long Walk Home Inc., a non-profit organization that integrates the performing and visual arts and art therapy to educate the public about healing from sexual, domestic, and community violence end trauma.  She is the featured subject and writer for SOARS, a social documentary multimedia performance, which details the journey of surviving sexual assault, and is an Associate Producer of Aishah Shahidah Simmons?s groundbreaking documentary, ?NO!? Most recently, her writing has appeared in Savoring the Salt: The Legacy of Toni Cade Bambara and Battered, Black, and Blue: Violence in the Lives of Black Women.

Dr. Boyce Watkins is Assistant Professor of Finance at Syracuse University. In addition to publishing numerous scholarly articles on Finance and investing, Dr. Watkins has presented his message to millions, making regular appearances in various national media outlets, including CNN, MSNBC, FOX News, BET, NPR, Essence Magazine, USA Today, The Today Show, ESPN, The Tom Joyner Morning Show and CBS Sports.  He is also the favored Financial Expert and social commentator for ?The Wendy Williams Experience?, which has 11 million listeners nation-wide.  In 2002, Dr. Watkins was the only African-American in the world to earn a PhD in Finance.  He has written several books, including “What if George Bush were a Black Man?”, “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about College”, and “Financial Lovemaking 101: Merging Assets with Your Partner in Ways that Feel Good.” Dr. Watkins is also the National Director of the Step Up and Go to College Program, which motivates students to attend college and gives them secrets to academic success.

Please join me in welcoming Drs. Tillet and Watkins to BlackProf!!!!!
