Another Wrong-Way Driver Causes Serious Car Wreck in Hampton Roads

By Emily Mapp Brannon

ADVERTISEMENTS

The driver of a Ford Escape went the wrong way into the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT). Numerous vehicles were hit and there was at least one reported injury, according to The Virginian-Pilot. We don't know the severity of the injury. The driver of the Escape was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

This car accident comes on the heels of two fatal car crashes involving wrong-way drivers in Virginia (VA). One of the tragic wrong-way accidents occurred on Interstate 264 (I-264) featuring a driver barreling through the HOV gates in the wrong lane on 264 and slamming head-on into a Ford Taurus. Both the at-fault driver and the driver of the Taurus died as a result of the crash, according to the Pilot.

The other fatal accident occurred on I-295 when the driver of a Dodge pickup truck went the wrong way and hit a Cadillac sedan carrying a father and his 8-year-old daughter. The father was killed and the daughter was seriously injured.

Sadly, there have been multiple instances of wrong-way drivers causing fatal car wrecks in the Commonwealth. In May 2007 and February 2006, a total of six people were killed due to a wrong-way driver.

As mentioned earlier, the driver of the Escape was charged with a DUI. If those charges hold up and the driver is found guilty, it wouldn't be surprising if they wind up going to jail for a long time. Driving under the influence of alcohol is unacceptable and displays a level of negligence and irresponsibility that is truly disturbing. Virginia police might also have grounds to charge the driver with fleeing the scene of an accident considering the Escape hit multiple vehicles in the HRBT but wasn't pulled over until reaching the south island, according to the Pilot.
