New Measures Being Considered for Crib Safety

By Paul Thomson

ADVERTISEMENTS

Bloomberg Press reported on discussions within the Consumer Product Safety Commission surrounding safety standards for cribs. The design of drop-side cribs has been a continual problem, resulting in several deaths and many injuries. According to the article, over 7 million cribs have been recalled since 2007. Usually, companies offer customers a free repair kit to fix the defect, but the CPSC is concerned that the kits are not being utilized and the hazardous cribs are still being used. They are "considering requiring crib makers to provide customers with refunds and other monetary incentives when the companies' products are recalled." This would be more of an incentive to replace the defective crib. The agency is also considering six steps to improve how recalls are handled. Hopefully these measures will protect children from the dangers of unsafe cribs.
