: The GavelProp. 8 Trial at ?Crossroads?
By Peter Hardin
The trial of a lawsuit challenging California’s gay marriage ban is in its third week, “at a crossroads”–as the San Jose Mercury News put it–as defenders of the ban deliver their testimony in a “counteroffensive.”
Legal experts watching the case believe the plaintiffs challenging the law, which went into effect after voters approved Proposition 8 on a statewide ballot, “have presented a powerful cumulative case,” the newspaper said in an article that offers a helpful wrap-up of the trial to date.
The historic case is expected to result in a decision that could be appealed all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. According to the Firedoglake blog, a final phase of the trial could be delayed “perhaps for a matter of weeks,” as District Judge Vaughn Walker indicated he’d prefer to have closing arguments delivered after he can review evidence, testimony, and exhibits.
