: Legal Pad | LASixty guilty pleas in Mongols racketeering case
By Richard Binder
Thom Mrozek, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office, said yesterday that 60 of the 79 Mongols Motorcycle Club members arrested in a federal sweep have pleaded guilty to racketeering charges. About 10 of those who entered guilty pleas have been sentenced to up to 20 years in prison, and the rest are expected to be sentenced later this year, Mrozek went on to say. The trial for the remaining 19 defendants is set for April 13.
Purported ringleader Ruben "Doc" Cavasos, of West Covina, agreed in January of last year to cooperate with prosecutors in exchange for leniency. The federal indictment said the Mongols are actively engaged in drug trafficking, especially in distribution of methamphetamine and cocaine, and it is typically in conflict with other gangs such as the Mexican Mafia.
The Mongols' strongest presence remains in Southern California, where nearly 400 of the 600 members are located.
