Clean trucks agreement under fire from environmental groups

By Richard Binder

ADVERTISEMENTS

Weeks after approving a deal with the trucking lobby over enforcement measures in its Clean Trucks Plan, the Port of Long Beach and the American Trucking Associations find themselves the subject of a suit brought by The Natural Resources Defense Council and the Sierra Club.

The two environmental groups seek to overturn the deal, claiming that it violates city and state law because it didn't seek public approval first and lacks an environmental review.

Tom Politeo, spokesperson for the Sierra Club, said the port?s clean-truck program involves more than replacing old polluting trucks with low-emission new trucks. And allowing the ATA to challenge future changes to the program - including the city's authority to implement replacement of clean trucks - "puts the wolf in charge of the henhouse," according to attorney David Pettit, director of the NRDC's Southern California Clean Air Program.
