: Notes from the (Legal) UndergroundBy Evan Schaeffer
COSTA RICA Day 2 . . . We spent the day in San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica. Some of the museums we planned to see were closed on Mondays (bad planning), so we did a lot of walking around. Photos--
Our hotel in San Jose: Hotel Grano de Oro --
Austin in the hotel's courtyard, at breakfast--
A giant nativity scene in Parque Central--
MORE PHOTOS AFTER THE BREAK --
Austin on the streets--
Objects from the Museum of Precolombian Gold (one museum that was open)--
Austin looking at an art exhibition at the same museum--
A low-sitting park bench in Parque Nacional--
Austin on a street filled with tourist souvenirs--
At the San Jose Zoo. We went there because a tour book said the conditions were "appalling," which sounded sort of interesting--plus, most of the museums were closed. At the entrance, you're greeted with a Pfizer ad. There are others in the park too. (It's similar to Mexico City, where McDonald's has taken over the zoo)--
Appalling? Here's one of the lions in a old-fashioned cage--
Graffiti on the bamboo stalks--
A crocodile after just having finished a tasty beverage (Gatorade, of course)--
And last, now out of the zoo, a booth in the Mercado Central--
Plans for tonight: See Avatar (shown here in English with Spanish subtitles), then prepare to check out tomorrow and head to Volcan Arenal. There's no Internet there, I don't think, so we'll be out of touch for a few days.
