Life Optimizer blog has a good article this week:

6 Ways to Motivate Others

1. Treat People Kindly.
2. Give People Responsibility.
3. Be a Good Listener.
4. Set Stretched Goals.
5. Get to Know People.
6. Keep Everyone in the Know.

It doesn't conflict too much with the classic Harvard Business Review article on motivation which asked, once more with feeling, How do you motivate employees? The short answer is you can't! All you can do is provide an environment for motivation and get out of the way.
