As a 12-year-old girl exited her school bus on Bay Street in Staten Island, a woman in an SUV hit the child and then fled the scene, allege police.

A school bus stopped to unload students with lights flashing and stop sign extended about 3:19 p.m. on Tuesday when the impatient driver of a Ford Explorer SUV passed the line of waiting cars and hit a 12-year-old child exiting the bus. The SUV did not stop after hitting the child.

The child was transported to Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze and released later in the day. Court papers say the girl suffered only minor injuries of cuts and bruises on her legs.

A witness managed to get the license plate number of the SUV, followed to where the driver parked the on nearby Cliff Street and then called the police. Police impounded the vehicle. Karen Myles, 24, of New Britain but formerly of Brooklyn, appeared at the 120th Precinct stationhouse in St. George at about 11 p.m. Tuesday evening to retrieve the Ford Explorer SUV and police arrested her.

'I was meeting my boyfriend and I parked my vehicle on Cliff Street and went out,' Myles said, according to court papers.

Myles was arraigned in Stapleton Criminal Court on charges of first- and second-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree assault, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and endangering the welfare of a child. She was released on $1,000 bail until her next court date.
