Private Transactions
You?re not ashamed to pay for it, you say,
And laugh off mumbled scruples I might raise:
It flourishes, despite po-faced, uptight
Attempts to stamp it out: I have no right
To criticise the purchase of what ought
To be given, whole-hearted, not greedily, seedily, bought.
You insist it?s quite natural, part of our tradition,
Being serviced by that most ancient and useful profession.
But you can?t feel they do it for love, they must seek distraction
In thoughts of the money, through the tedious sordid transaction.
And it?s not like you?re visiting prostitutes, for God?s sake, nothing of that kind -
You?re just doing the best for your child, in the school that you choose,
You prefer ?independent? to ?private?, by the way, if I don?t mind,
Like you don?t mind those other kids your free choice freely screws.
