COURTS: "Judge delays lawsuit against embattled congressman"

By Michael Stevens

ADVERTISEMENTS

From Herald Leader, 2/25/08:

The civil case against an indicted Louisiana congressman and a former business associate has been delayed until the criminal case against the lawmaker is over.

U.S. District Judge Charles Simpson halted proceedings on Monday against Democratic U.S. Rep. William Jefferson, his wife and former business associate Vernon Jackson. Simpson said little can be done to advance the civil case in Louisville while criminal charges are pending.

Jefferson's criminal trial on racketeering and other charges was scheduled to begin Monday in Alexandria, Va. It has been indefinitely delayed while the congressman appeals a ruling in the case.

Daniel Cadle of Newton Falls, Ohio, sued Jefferson, his wife and Jackson in February 2007 alleging the three schemed to funnel money to Jefferson and foreign officials. The suit was filed in Louisville because that's where Jackson's former telecommunications firm iGate was located.
