Lots of news coverage of this story:

Ontario’s ombudsman has blasted the province’s Legal Aid agency for “catastrophic” errors in judgment in the financing of the $1 million defence of former Toronto police officer Richard Wills.

Seven different lawyers were paid with taxpayers’ money to defend Wills, a self-described ex-millionaire who was convicted last year of killing his girlfriend in 2002.

In a report released Tuesday, Ombudsman Andre Marin called the fiasco a “perfect storm,” fingering the Ministry of the Attorney General and Legal Aid Ontario for failing to monitor legal bills and allowing the case to continue unchecked.

Wills seems to have been way ahead of the game on how to play the system, divesting himself of substantial assets so as to be able to plead poverty and get legal aid. Hopefully they’ll be able to nail him over this. A civil lawsuit was immediately announced, accusing Wills of unjust enrichment through fraudulent conveyance of several properties to his wife and sister.
