Duck, duck, duck, cake

ADVERTISEMENTS
Another week gone by, no time to blog. I was hoping to at least post a picture of K's second Mommy-inflicted haircut. The first, right around Thanksgiving, was too short but arguably decent. This one is completely uneven and looks as though I snipped away haphazardly while he was distracted by his duck in the tub, which not coincidentally is true. Luckily his natural adorableness overcomes any damage Mommy can do with blunt scissors.

K's first birthday is coming up and we are heading to his great-grandmother's house for a family party. I tend to be dessert-obsessed and spent quite a while leafing through cookbooks and searching online for first birthday party cakes. At first I was going to make a four-layer cake with alternating layers of white and dark chocolate mousse, but JW nixed that as not baby-birthdayish enough. (Conceded.) So I started thinking about what K would actually like for his first sugary experience. I thought about an apple cake with cream cheese frosting, but ultimately settled on a white cake with lemon zest, raspberry jam and lemon (or vanilla?) pastry cream filling, covered with whipped cream. I bought a duck-shaped pan and I'll tint the whipped cream yellow and orange, and use an M&M for the duck's eye. Very excited about this.

Haircut and duck cake pictures forthcoming!
