Luce Forward develops unique associate pay scale

San Diego's Luce Forward developed a 14 level pay scale for associates, The Recorder reports.

Productivity and practice area are key to determining an attorney's salary on the new scale, and can trump seniority. The idea is that it would help the 222-lawyer firm recruit the most competitive and productive folks while keeping lower-rate practice areas and people who want to work less hours.

But the scale is not without its critics, who say it might create tension by creating a second-class of associates.
