: Dispatches from the Culture WarsA Visit to Whole Foods
By Ed Brayton
On Thursday, I went to a Whole Foods for the first time in my life. Verdict: Loved it. A grocery store where you can buy dry-aged prime beef? Honey I'm home. I was astonished by the amount and the quality of the prepared food they had there for people to buy for "take home and heat it up" dinners. Most grocery stores now have premade meals available, but not in the kind of variety they have at Whole Foods.
I find the criticisms of Whole Foods interesting. Yes, it's target audience are hippy liberals with money. And therefore what? Yes, they do have higher prices than your average grocery store. Guess what? Produce that is grown organically and meat that is raised organically and in a more sustainable manner costs more. I'm willing to pay that price.
