As schools across the country settle into their routines for this school year, there?s lots of news to report? but one topic that?s missing is teacher strikes. Only one strike broke out this year, and that?s in line with a downward trend in recent years, according to this Associated Press story. State laws that impact teachers? abilities to strike, longer contracts, and teachers who may understand the budget pressures school districts are experiencing are factors that have led to the decline, according to the AP.
In other news this week:
- A jury in Louisville, Ky., reached a ?not guilty? verdict in the nation?s first criminal trial of a high school football coach who was accused of working his players too hard on a hot day last summer, which may have contributed to the death of a 15-year-old sophomore. The student?s parents hope the case will raise awareness of the dangers players can face when practicing on a hot day.
- The federal government paid $12 million for 1,718 students in the District of Columbia to attend private schools last year, but a survey of the schools that accepted the vouchers shows that more than a fifth of them are unaccounted for, a Senate leader says.
- State and local laws designed to protect youngsters from bullying haven?t been very effective, according to an analysis by the Associated Press. Parents and advocates are calling for tougher measures after several recent suicides of students who were bullied.
