Lots of buzz, but does FEC have a shot?

"All the atmospherics about the Sept. 9 oral argument on campaign finance reform at the Supreme Court scream 'very big deal!': the uniqueness of a September sitting, the first time Justice Sonia Sotomayor will be on the bench and the debut of Solicitor General Elena Kagan."

A family fights and a lawyer falls

"Hogan & Hartson partner Robert Cave was warned not to get involved. But he agreed to help Colleen Boland negotiate a settlement agreement with her ex-husband. Now nearly 12 years later, Boland is dead and her two sons are suing Cave and Hogan & Hartson in two courts for breach of contract and malpractice."

Big Battles

"The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit begins its fall session Sept. 14, kicking off a docket that in December will bring the full court together for the first time in more than two years and will include several cases rooted in international affairs. "

Chicago lawyers dine at Blagojevich buffet

"The scandal involving the former Illinois governor is keeping the city's white-collar criminal defense bar very busy. At least 30 lawyers, including three former U.S. attorneys for the Northern District of Illinois, and some 20 law firms have signed on to represent Blagojevich, his five co-defendants and a growing list of potential witnesses, some of whom could become defendants themselves."

Wage-and-hour complaints head for a company near you

"Employers, already battling a rash of private lawsuits, are bracing for yet more scrutiny over their pay practices in light of a new report that shows wage-and-hour violations are running rampant in the workplace."

THE PRACTICE

Labor Day memo: Elections have consequences

"As we observe Labor Day, it is appropriate to look for signs of what to expect from President Obama's administration and the Democratic-controlled Congress in labor-management relations. Since the president's inauguration, his administration has actively moved toward labor reform through legislative measures, by strengthening the already expansive compliance and enforcement authority of the Department of Labor and by nominating former union lawyers to the National Labor Relations Board. Early indications thus point to a paradigm shift to the left during the next four years and potentially beyond."

OPINION

Archaic rules hobble attorneys

"Many lawyers and law firms are trying to survive and prosper. The very people who should be helping them should start thinking about not being obstacles to their ability to earn a living."
