Law Review Submission: An Anecdote

By Gordon Smith, Christine, Hurt, Vic Fleischer, Fred Tung, Lisa Fairfax, David Zaring

ADVERTISEMENTS

A friend recently accepted an offer to publish his first law review article. In reviewing the report from Expresso, he found the following facts about his submission:

39 submissions
22 rejections
15 nonresponses
2 offers (plus one outside of Expresso)

But here is the interesting part: his paper was downloaded only nine times! Even though he requested expedited review after each offer.

Let's assume that two of those nine downloads are from the law reviews who offered him publication, and that the other seven law reviews who downloaded his paper issued rejections. If that's true, then 15 of his 22 rejections were from editors who never looked at his paper! And another 15 submissions never got to the eye of an editor. His paper was never read by editors at 30 of the 39 law reviews to which he sent it.

This is a very good article, and I wish more editors would have taken the time to find out about it.
