Notes on China FDI Law Syllabus - or why I haven?t been blogging much this week

By Stan

ADVERTISEMENTS

The syllabus for my China Foreign Direct Investment Law class is due Monday, so as the deadline approaches, I’ve been putting extra time in to iron out reading and topic issues.

I think I’ve pretty much sorted out most of my reading assignments and topics at this point, so I thought I’d share and see if anyone had some suggestions. This also gives me another incentive to get my shit together before submitting a final syllabus.

Some background: the class is semester length, 60 hours of classroom time broken down into three-hour classes - 20 classes total. The students are approximately 1/3 foreign law students (this year, only Americans) and 2/3 Chinese law students.

Note that the topics are somewhat tailored to my personal areas of expertise. This is why I have devoted six hours to IP and only two hours to tax. I think I’ve adequately covered all the bases here, though, given time constraints.

OK, so here’s the tentative list of classes and (some of the) sub-topics that I’ve identified thus far:

1. Introduction to China FDI

  • History of FDI in modern China (roughly from 1840s, with emphasis on post-1978 developments);
  • Economic development theories
  • WTO accession and effect on legal reform
  • Practice of FDI law in China (mini primer for lawyers on the challenges of working for foreign investors)
    (More)
