What is a Legal Document Assistant?

By RJ

ADVERTISEMENTS
In California, Legal Document Assistants were drafted into law in essence to provide a secretarial service to the general public. LDA's are authorized to type/ prepare the actual legal document for the general public, but only at the direction of the person requesting the form. At no time whatsoever can an LDA provide legal assistance or advice of any type.

In California, paralegals are no longer allowed to work for the general public. If you want assistance typing up that document you now seek an LDA. Paralegals in California, may only work for and at the direction of attorneys.

Here is the best benefit to the general public: LDA's must be bonded and registered in the county they provide services in. So make sure when seeking the assistance of LDA you ask for proof that they are bonded and registered.

In the end if you want legal assistance, need advice, want more than some one to simply type your document --- CALL A LICENSED ATTORNEY. Guess what, you get to work that paralegal you wanted to all along -- they are waiting for you, just go through the attorney first.

Have more questions? Want to know what else paralegals can or can't do? Have specific request not sure where to turn? Just give our office call at 562-439-5434 we'll have the answer waiting for you!
