August 18, 1948 – Congress Establishes the Bureau of Immigration
On this day in 1948, Congress established the Bureau of Immigration. Today, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), a division of the Department of Homeland Security, is responsible for the administration of immigration and citizenship issues in the U.S.
