: Legal Pad | LADigital piracy no longer a Real possibility

Hollywood studios scored a crucial win in the war against digital piracy on Tuesday when U.S. District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel issued a pretrial junction on RealNetworks, preventing it from either selling the DVD-copying technology known as RealDVD or licensing it to others. Judge Patel cited a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
If the injunction isn't overturned on appeal, Real will be unable to follow through with plans for a home video jukebox that would allow people to copy and store their DVD collections on a hard drive.
Patel made the initial ruling against Napster in 2000. Real is reportedly considering its next move.
