Pepperdine conservative scholar named new ambassador

Unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 7th, Douglas W. Kmiec is the United States Ambassador to the Republic of Malta.  He will be on leave from Pepperdine University as the Caruso Family Chair in Constitutional Law during his service.

As reported at the BLT back in March, Kmiec famously endorsed Barack Obama, citing what he felt was the then-nominee's "considerable sensitivity to the issues of church and state," despite their differences on abortion - and despite Kmiec's having served in the Department of Justice Office of Legal Counsel for Presidents Reagan and George H.W. Bush.
