Guangdong Student Has Very Bad Day

By Stan

ADVERTISEMENTS

I seem to be writing about criminal prosecution today. So be it. This one is kind of sad.

A university student was sentenced to three years’ prison for accidentally killing a woman when he landed on her while trying to commit suicide by jumping from his 7th floor dormitory in Guangzhou. (Shanghai Daily)

You have to feel sorry for this poor student, I suppose. Not only was his suicide attempt unsuccessful, but how unlucky do you have to be to land on someone? And I don’t know about you, but if it was me, I’d go to a higher building. Even if you land on someone, you’d be dead and immune to prosecution.

Perhaps this person really didn’t want to commit suicide at all?

On the other hand, you gotta admit that was reckless behavior. It was certainly foreseeable that someone would be walking/standing on the ground outside the building.

Conclusion: fair verdict, unless the plaintiff was mentally impaired or there were other extenuating circumstances.
