Today's Winston-Salem Journal reports, "Vote on death-row disparity delayed."A vote by the North Carolina Senate on whether attorneys could offer a statistical argument showing that racial prejudice put a killer on death row has been postponed. Bill sponsor Sen. Floyd McKissick of Durham County rescheduled the vote on what supporters call the Racial Justice Act from yesterday to today as he tried to round up votes. The legislation would allow judges to consider whether statistical data show that race was behind the decision of prosecutors to seek, or jurors to impose, the death penalty. The North Carolina Senate is again scheduled to convene at 3:00 pm (EDT,) and SB 461 is on the calendar; the session will be webcast.The North Carolina-based organization People of Faith Against the Death Penalty posted a call for action today...continue to full post
