"Under God"

By Lindsay

ADVERTISEMENTS
Check this out.

Did you know that "under God" wasn't originally part of the Pledge of Allegiance? It was added during the Red Scare in 1954, when the country was in the grips of McCarthyism.

Interesting what orchestrated fear can achieve that reason and logic can't.

Separation of Church and State is fundamental to the ideals upon which this country was founded. Most of us don't know the Pledge of Allegiance to not have the phrase "one nation, under God, indivisible"... yet that's not the original Pledge. Just think about it. Do you think it's Constitutional to have the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance?

From Religioustolerance.org:

"The statement that the United States is a nation 'under God' is an endorsement of religion. It is a profession of a religious belief, namely, a belief in monotheism," Rulings by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in 2002-JUN and 2003-FEB.

"If you doubt that the phrase "under God" is religious, then try substituting 'under Buddha' or 'under Allah,' or 'under Krishna,' and repeat the Pledge." From an E-mail received by [the] web site.
