ADVERTISEMENTS
In case you haven’t been checking School Board News Today, NSBA’s daily round-up of the best and most relevant news stories for school board members, here’s what you missed this week:
- The White House has announced that students will be the first in line for the H1N1 vaccine this fall, and health experts say this may be the biggest vaccination campaign in schools since the polio epidemic in the 1950s.
- Texas is headed for another curriculum showdown, this time over social studies, as conservatives appointed by the state board think that civil rights leaders Thurgood Marshall and Cesar Chavez don’t rise to the status of “important historical figure.” They’ll also make recommendations on the teaching of religion in public life and the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion in 1973.
- Some of the laid-off teachers in Broward County, Fla., got good news this week: the district will hire them back to fill jobs vacated by other teachers who didn’t renew their certifications. Several districts in Florida and other parts of the country have recently avoided layoffs or recalled teachers using their federal stimulus money.
- And in an emotional hearing, Congress learns about the impacts of bullying from a panel of school safety advocates, including a mother of an 11-year-old boy who committed suicide.
