My Guess -- Edwards Won't Endorse

By wt

ADVERTISEMENTS
The big news of the day is that Obama and Edwards met in North Carolina this morning.

Of all the reports I've seen of the story, though, only the NYT's Caucus article had these details:

Associates of Mr. Edwards have said that Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton has paid more attention to the courtship of Mr. Edwards. She held a private meeting with him in North Carolina more than a week ago and associates of both Democrats said it appeared as though Mr. Edwards was leaning to Mrs. Clinton.

Color me surprised.

After calling Clinton the candidate of the status quo and rumors that Obama and Edwards might already have an endorsement arrangement worked out, I had no idea Edwards was leaning toward Clinton.

Except that explains why he hasn't endorsed yet. And also, why he won't endorse anyone soon.

If he's leaning toward Hillary, his choices are to endorse her while she's down -- never an attractive option for politicians who like to pretend their preferences are listened to -- or stay neutral.

I suspect he'll do the latter. On the other hand, if Clinton wins Wisconsin, or hits it big on March 4th, you may see a turnabout.

For now, though, expect nothing.
