This Weekend Twitter Earned Some of its Hype

ADVERTISEMENTS

The ReadWriteWeb, NY TImes, and WSJ Digits blog all note how CNN failed to adequately cover the protests in Iran this past weekend following the disputed presidential election. Twitterers created a new hashtag, #cnnfail, which trended on Saturday and Sunday (but isn’t as of now).

CNN finally got with the program (pun intended) by Saturday evening, but it was too late for some people, according to Digits:

“… while CNN’s coverage of Iran was plentiful on Sunday, Twitterers continued to debate the issue of whether the mainstream media does a sufficient job covering international events. ‘Let’s give them credit for covering it today. They deserve criticism for yesterday though, no matter what they say,’ wrote one user, while another mused, ‘amazing that a critical trend on twitter can elicit a direct response from a media giant. definitely a good thing.’”

In-depth coverage of an important election is what I’d expect from, say, the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. Which is on PBS. Which means I ought to create a #DTVfail hashtag.

Oh look, somebody created one already.
